Momiji Nishiya won the gold medal in skateboarding in Tokyo 2020 at the age of 13 years and 330 days and did so in the trick section, with 15.26 points in the street skate test (for Japan it is yet another victory in the discipline after the success of Horigome, who won the men’s title last Sunday).
The Japanese athlete, however, did not exceed the historical record that belongs to Marjorie Gestring , an American diver who won an Olympic competition in the “shame of 1936” edition (in the three-meter springboard, ed), known to history other, at 13 years and 268 days, about two months earlier than the Japanese skater. He is the fourth on the list of the youngest Olympic champions of all time to have slipped a gold around his neck. In front of her, then, there are the German Klaus Zerta , 13 years and 283 days (rowing, 1960 edition) and the Chinese Fu Mingxia , 13 years and 346 days (diving, 1992 edition). As reported by the editorial staff of Sky Sport, the youngest ever medal is quite dated and dates back to the first Olympics, in Athens 1896, with the Greek gymnast Dimitrios Loundras , bronze medal at the age of 10 .
Only prodigy girls or boys can afford the luxury of getting on an Olympics podium and Momiji Nishiya is one of them. And that’s not all, because the Japanese finished her performance in front of another 2007 class, the Brazilian Rayssa Leal , who at home they call “The Fairy”.
Girls, therefore, if we want to call them that, who have entered the history of the most important international sports competition ever thanks to their identity card. The Japanese , with this triumph, will boast another record (after the one recorded last Sunday compatriot), unique and which will remain written in the golden book: the thirteen year old athlete, in fact, was the first Women’s Gold Medal in this specialty ( skateboarding was introduced in this edition).
