A recent study at the Preventive and Alternative Medicine Symposium surveyed more than 100 studies over 10 years and found that the benefits of vitamin C are increasing. “Vitamin C has received a lot of attention and for good reason. Higher levels of vitamin C in the blood may be an ideal nutritional marker for overall health,” said Dr. Mark Moyad, a researcher at the University of Michigan. “The more we study vitamin C, the better our understanding of protecting our health, cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, eye health [and] immunity from longevity.”
How much natural vitamin C is good for health?
Most studies studied by Moyad and colleagues used 500 mg of vitamin C per day to achieve a healthy effect. This is much higher than the RDA of 75-90 mg per day for adults. Therefore, unless you can eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, you may need to take vitamin C dietary supplements to get all the benefits, Moyard said. He recommends taking 500 mg a day and eating five servings of fruits and vegetables.
“For most people, it is impractical to consume the fruits and vegetables they need on a consistent basis, and taking supplements once a day is safe, effective and easy,” Moyad said. He also pointed out that only 10% to 20% of adults get the recommended 9 fruits and vegetables every day.

- “A recent meta-analysis shows that vitamin C is beneficial for individuals whose immune system is weakened by stress – a situation that is very common in our society,” Mojad said. Moreover, he added, “Because vitamin C is one of the stress-sensitive nutrients and the first nutrient for alcoholics, smokers, and obese people, it makes it an ideal marker for overall health.”
- Vitamin C may not be cured. But some studies have shown that it may help prevent more serious complications. “There is ample evidence that taking vitamin C to treat colds and flu can reduce the risk of further complications, such as pneumonia and lung infections,” Moyad said.
- Despite the contradictions in the study, a study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that patients with the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the blood had a 42% lower risk of stroke than those with the lowest concentration. The reason is not fully understood. But it is clear that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables have higher levels of vitamin C in their blood.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the relationship between nutrient intake and skin aging in 4,025 women aged 40-74 years.
