Full Blue Moon will appear next week
The full blue moon will be held on the evening of May 18th – this will be the last time you saw a chance for more than two years! Next week, sky viewers around the world will treat the amazing astronomical display in the form of a full blue moon.
When the moon and the sun are on the other side of the earth, a full moon occurs, which means that its face is completely illuminated. Although this special moon is called the blue moon, it does not actually appear blue in the night sky.
Instead, it got the name because it was the third of four full moons of the season. Usually, there are only three full moons in a season, which is a rare event – so this sentence “has been in a blue moon.”
NASA explained: “The blue moon is special because it is an ‘extra’ moon in a season with four full moons. This usually happens every two and a half years.” In the early Native American tribes, this moon was called the full moon, because it appeared in the spring because the flowers began to bloom.
For your best chance to see the blue moon, please go to the sky from BST 21:11. If you miss this full blue moon, you have to wait for another one. The next complete blue moon will take place on August 22, 2021.
